THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILDSince 1991, The International Day of the African Child is celebrated worldwide on the 16 thJune every year. this is a day to recognize and celebrate the achievements of children inAfrica. It was a result of the 1976 Soweto Uprising – when thousands of black schoolchildren in Soweto, South Africa, protested for better quality education.
In Kenya the WFWP Kenya chapter organized an event at Lampos Education Center, Kayole,Nairobi, Kenya. The school is based in the informal estates in the East of Nairobi and has 250 children.The goal was to commemorate the day and remind the children the importance of education and also teach character education as a way of creating a peaceful and conducive environment in the school.
The children had prepared poems, songs and dances for entertainment.Dr Susan Kone- the WFWP Kenya Chairperson gave a lecture on character education andMr. Ryna Minyata the Project Assistant reminded the children of the importance of education followed by a partner from Tumaini Africa Initiative Mr Dan Amolo who gave his word of guidance to the pupils.
The School Director Mr Marube and Manager Mr. Ben Mutua thanked the WFWP Kenya fortheir Love and service to the school. The children received gifts of snacks and refreshmentsto be shared among all the children in the school.
The school also received their membership certificate and are enthusiastic to work inpartnership with WFWP to create a peaceful and happy community.
